Five questions to Mr. Godo
-Yesterday you were invited to a working lunch with the President of the Republic? What can you tell us?
The Republican Party has declared that it will support cooperation among moderate political forces and with the opponent. There is an agreement for left-wing parties to cooperate with right-wing ones within the country’s democracy. Such cooperation exists in other countries, and this is one of the ways many interacting political forces cooperate. In this way we will also benefit from other relevant politicians, including groups that are clearly closer to other parties. This agreement always has another aspect as well, namely the country’s integration into Europe.
As for yesterday’s developments at the Presidency, I have nothing more to say than what has been said and written. This is one whole matter, because it concerns politics and not the man himself. What concerns politics is the most important. Sometimes things are not so intense. That does not mean that those who talk and act all day are politicians. Sometimes the tension created around ten names or even a hundred of them in France, England, etc., where politics is conducted with moderation and diplomacy, must be created here so that we can harmonize what exists among us for the sake of the Republic.
Finally, I would emphasize once again that we must see politics on the basis of democracy, stability and European integration.
…in all three elements of state and economic development.
How do you assess the situation in parliament and relations among the parties?
I think that in Albania, as in any other country, politics is not made by just one force, but by two or more forces. These forces must also be in dialogue and cooperation in order to have a strong government. If the democratic and opposition parties accuse each other, that does not mean that Albania is in crisis that day. Politics also means cooperation and competition. Cooperation and dialogue strengthen the country’s democratic structures.
I also have a question: in what way can relations with right-wing parties grow, and why are they needed?
In Albania there are right-wing parties, but there are also center parties, left parties and democratic parties. The healthiest relations are those between the right, center and left forces, so that they work for the country’s development. The relations among these forces, as world experience also shows, make us more responsible, build stronger governance and make it impossible for dictatorship to return. Such a government, with strong alternating shifts, is better able to create a policy for the state and for the future. Today, with government and opposition, we are in a situation where we must seek such relations.
Within democratization, how will centrist politics be organized?
I think there will be a rapprochement among Albanian centrists, and parties closer to our country are also working on this issue, such as the European People’s Party. We seek an Albania of all parties for the sake of development and various rights and benefits. A possible future formation, such as a center bloc, may also have its own name. But today we must emphasize the creation of strong parties and that they work for the country’s interests.
Special importance is given to the political and electoral environment. The upcoming election campaign should be calmer than previous ones. In the afternoon, I saw Mr. Ramiz Alia speaking together. That was fine, since we are all party members, the press, academics, journalists, artists, etc., and people who live in this country. It is understood that if there are problems, they should be resolved through dialogue and cooperation, not through violent or military actions. Those are part of the country’s past history.
Unfortunately, in the world it seems that people only make room for you when you take up arms. In this case, I am glad that today we live in peaceful times and that we can overcome challenges with calm and cooperation.
At the 12th Congress of the Democratic Party. Mr. Shehu tells the democrats that they will be more useful to international partners in these two respects: on the path of Albania’s integration into European structures. With this good policy we will lead the country toward a safer construction.
The importance of ties with Greece
It can hardly be believed that there were 1,000 people in Tirana and today I did not find out whether there are persons who accept them. I think foreign and domestic policy have been disjointed, but there is a chance that we must be clearer in our ties with Greece. It is good that our relations with Greece become healthier.
