Godo: Objections for more accurate elections
“The genocide law should be restricted; the deputy chair of the commission should be from the opposition”
“I consider the President’s roundtable a necessary thing to do”
After receiving the invitation from Berisha yesterday morning, the Republican chairman also spoke about the inter-party meeting.
“This afternoon we will find out what the final version of the electoral law for the local elections will be,” Sabri Godo said yesterday. “On this issue we have set out our objections. In general, we support the 1992 electoral law, with some improvements that provide greater guarantees for a more accurate conduct of the elections.”
Then the Republican Party chairman continued: “In connection with the elections, one of the deputy chairmen of the Central Commission and of the other commissions should be elected by the commission or be a representative of the opposition. We will put these and other observations before this broad roundtable being organized. It seems to me a necessary and very positive step towards resolving the election issue properly.”
This afternoon Godo will go to the President of the Republic, accompanied by his deputy Mediu and, as the right-wing leader believes, by thirteen other parties as well.

with some improvements to elections.” The Republican leader then also spoke about the genocide law, for which the left-wing opposition initially called for repeal and later for amendment. “We agree with this law in principle,” Godo said, “but now, in the case of the local elections, it cannot be extended to all the councillors, for example. It should therefore remain in force only for the figures who will head local government: the chairmen of communes and municipalities, and so on, without being extended further. This concerns thousands of people, and there is no need for it to have broader scope. This was one of our main objections.”
“Just as there was also an absurd seven-year situation.” But the other Serbian opposition parties reacted negatively. They called it a backroom deal between Rugova and

The PRSH Steering Committee met
Candidates at all levels of local government
Yesterday morning, under the chairmanship of the PR chairman, Mr. Sabri Godo, the PR Steering Committee met and discussed the work carried out so far as part of the electoral campaign for the local elections of October 20.
After the report by the head of the Electoral Department, Mr. Gjok Beçi, who focused mainly on the PR candidates and the relevant documentation submitted to the department by PR branches in the districts, the Steering Committee members who had been delegated by the Central Office to the local branches gave an overview of the situation and the work carried out by the branches on the eve of the campaign.
Following a detailed analysis, the Steering Committee decided:
1. By September 15, completion and the relevant corrections to the documentation for candidates for local government must be finalized.
2. The working group consisting of three members and chaired by deputy chairman Mediu is to present the PR draft platform for the local elections by September 17, 1996. The Steering Committee is to meet on September 25 to approve this platform.
3. On Saturday, September 7, at 10:00, a meeting with all district branch chairmen will be held at the PR Central Headquarters to discuss campaign issues.
The Steering Committee also approved the position taken by deputy chairman Mediu at the meeting with the EC delegation and at the roundtable organized by IRI.
Mr. Sabri Godo also reported to the Steering Committee on his visit to the USA and his meetings with American political and state figures.
