Paying them off costs us no more than 7 ships carrying bituminous sand. There has been a great deal of noise about this phenomenon. I think we have done what a banking system based on the socialist model we inherited, or currently undergoing restructuring, could not do. In other words, we took a risk by entering this business. However, I do not rule out the presence of speculators or “phantom companies,” as some call the rentier firms of z Alimuça. Throughout this period, the “SILVA” company has applied the lowest interest rates compared with other firms. This may seem somewhat paradoxical and contradicts our considerable need for investment funds, which we have so far faced. But we have pursued this policy on deposit interest rates in order to protect the interests of our company. In a manner of speaking, we are sharing our “fat” profits with our creditors or depositors. On the other hand, I do not rule out the influence that the nature of the pyramid schemes we have operated may also have had on the level of interest rates we applied—a factor that should not be ignored.
