The confidence-approved government flies to Rome
The confidence vote, a formal act
Yesterday Nano’s government won the confidence of parliamentarians with 114 votes in favor and 3 abstentions.
In fact, the confidence vote was a formal act. It had been secured as early as June 29, when the left secured a majority. A confidence vote is not everything; the government would do well to weigh carefully the burden it has taken upon its shoulders. It must not forget that it is treading on land that is aflame and mined, governing an armed people who do not know what to do with bullets, Kalashnikovs, machine guns, mines and dynamite. In every corner of Albania, death has its trap set. Yesterday’s confidence vote carries with it the government’s responsibility. Now that it has the confidence vote in its pocket, it certainly must not measure itself by its morning shadow. Meksi had also won a confidence vote, as had Berisha, but everything melted away like salt in water. The government must do its sums carefully; above all, it must not anger Albanians, but bring them together, and give hope to the opposition as well. Let quarrels be left to election campaigns; now let us get to work. It is up to the government to establish political cooperation in order to implement the program that has won confidence. We must all fight crime, opposition and government alike; we all need public order, otherwise we will destroy ourselves like a bomb. A state without an army, a state without order, a country riddled with crime serves neither the left nor the right. The Republican Party has its own obsessions about the program, which merely throws a little camouflage to the right and remains as it is: a left-wing government. Thus it remains as it is: a left-wing government. Thus, the national question cannot continue to be handled as it has been by Albanian diplomacy. All the noise we made about Kosovo for five years got us nowhere. Kosovo remained under the Serbian yoke. Albanians in Macedonia are being beaten and killed for Albanian symbols; the Albanian state’s response has been rabid. The Çam community was left forgotten even in the Nano government’s program. Meanwhile, property under the Nano government remains framed in Leninist concepts: “Farmers, enjoy your land.” But the PR will not bring down the government through political destabilization. We will remain in opposition to the government, aligning ourselves with the moderate opposition. The government, having just won the confidence vote, travels to Rome today. The eyes of Albanians are fixed there. We hope that, for the sake of Albanians who have lost so much in the insane war between [unclear], the government will not return empty-handed.
