The old paths of Albanian politics
—Extremism, this affliction of our spiteful politicians
Everything that happened yesterday in the Albanian Parliament was to be expected. A declared communist from Berat put Berisha on trial, harshly labeling him a criminal and a thief. According to him, the communist Berisha has strayed from his kind. Azem Hajdari came to the defense of his spiritual leader with everything he had. He spared neither his fists nor the vulgar language characteristic of the street politician. Meanwhile, DP fans, who have replaced the daily hecklers of the SP, tried to encourage Berisha with shouts and applause. Berisha, after catching his breath, went up to the podium and began insulting the SP, the government and the parliament of Kalashnikovs. The socialists showed their respect for the hoarse-voiced DP firebrand by emptying the hall. But the enigmatic politician Majko remained motionless in his seat and returned Berisha’s salvo, blaming him for the deaths of thousands of innocent people whose lives were taken by the Democrats’ regime.
The socialists’ request for a minute’s silence in respect for the victims of Berisha’s dictatorship prompted the Democrats to imitate the socialists by leaving Parliament and going out into the corridor. Berisha did not return to the hall.
That was yesterday’s event in the Albanian Parliament, which was seen as a bad omen by Albanians, who were waiting for some ray of hope as democracy entered Parliament. Yesterday was a day of shame for the Albanian Parliament. The spectacle and the politician were [sic] not aggressive? [sic], knowing nothing other than the Balkan temperament, but above all paranoid about politics. Eight months of upheaval in Albania apparently have taught our wretched politicians nothing.
Albanian politics has now been diagnosed quite clearly: it suffers from amateurism, has criminalized elements and is undoubtedly extremist as a whole. The government and the opposition do not know how to coexist. Perhaps the forecast in yesterday’s editorial in “Republika,” which raised the question of how the Democrats would enter Parliament; the question of how the Democrats would enter Parliament; was a prediction or a constructive proposal, and proved correct. “Republika”’s hunch that the Democrats would not be a good thing, and the strong negative signs, proved right. Yesterday was a bitter event in Albanian politics.
The chairman of the PR, Sabri Godo, commenting on yesterday’s events, called the incident involving the communist Hasan a shameful provocation and Berisha’s statement abnormal. The Doctor, it seems, has not had enough of the street demonstrations. Yesterday, no more and no less, he called for people to take to the streets to shorten Nano’s time in government. Godo commented: “People are tired. Yesterday’s brawl will not get this country out of anarchy. The events of yesterday will not get this country out of anarchy. Parliamentarians must speak in a different language. Albanians ask little of politicians: only calm and order, work and money.” According to Godo, Albanian politics is following the old, spiteful paths, without respecting the morality and ethics of the opposition.
But the opposition went on.
At the start of the opposition session, at 5:00 p.m., when the sitting begins, let us hope that by 8:00 p.m. tempers will have cooled, Parliament will reopen and both sides will return with clear heads.
Let them enter the hall with clear heads.
