The round table and the half-rooster
. The Socialists fell into the Democratic Party’s trap. Today the Democrats will point the finger at those boycotting the dialogue
If today’s round table starts functioning, it would not be surprising if it proved more valuable than Parliament, which is not calming the tempers of Albanians.
In any case, today’s round table remains a half-rooster, because the SP and its left-wing allies will not sit down out of spite. The DP is the organizer of this round table, which has generally received the green light from most Albanian parties, but not from the party that won the majority. Yesterday, the Republican leader, Godo, told “Repub- ‘Republika’” that his party is ready to sit down for talks, because it is better to talk than to engage in fistfight politics, as is routinely happening in the Albanian Parliament. But Godo is somewhat optimistic when he says that this round table would be more clearly successful if it functioned in support of National Reconciliation. The parties taking part in today’s round table did not play along with the political currents of the day. The Socialists, eager to participate, easily fell into the DP’s trap and declared that they would not go to talks, because the Democrats had never behaved well in Parliament and had evaded the Constitution, which they did not [unclear] during the Democrats’ time in the majority. In fact, today the Democrats will take the field and point the finger at the boycotters and their boycott-minded politicians. They will not have to tire themselves out issuing statements about this. Today, however, talks begin on the cardinal issues concerning Albania. For the first time in a long while, the DP will not be able to wave the directing stick as it pleases. It will be obliged to listen to the other participants and perhaps, on this occasion, will be compelled to abandon its absurd megalomania. In fact, it has fallen from fear and has no reason to measure itself against its morning shadow. At the table, it must treat its interlocutors as equals; otherwise, [unclear] the one who sets the table. Albanians today are waiting for something to come to light, but whether we like it or not, this round table will remain merely advisory, as long as those in power do not sit at it. These left-wing officeholders continue, with a strange persecution mania, to voluntarily exclude themselves from talks that may be more worthwhile for them than for anyone else. There is no point in their being afraid of the round table’s agenda; the DP now has no power to impose conditions. *) Rome Conference.
