Rome divorces the “PD-PS alliance”

Berisha realized that his adventure to return to power is being thwarted by the international disregard for the PD Rome is definitively separating the two Albanian political camps, the PS and the PD. If until now there had been much speculation about a tacit PS-PD agreement, it seems that it will no longer exist. By accepting the PS’s offer to take part in the Rome meeting, the PD thus sent the first signal that it was abandoning its old political line and breaking with it to adopt a new strategy. Socialist propaganda described the step taken by Prime Minister Nano and Berisha’s acceptance of the invitation as an “event in Albanian politics.” In reality, the matter is simple. The opposition’s participation in the Rome Conference fulfills a condition suggested by the organizers. Berisha accepted the offer to implement a “pilot project” in the interests of the PD’s political future, trying to avoid the danger of division. Like a taxi-dependent, Berisha gave his party the opportunity to affirm its opposition status alongside the legalized institutions, just like irredeemable drug users. Now the PD will serve itself by abandoning the activity carried out on behalf of the PS, which brought the latter to power. So this is not about improving relations between government and opposition, but about the birth of a new opposition, which is persistently seeking international support. Until today, the real opposition was represented only by the right, but even that opposition was not fully institutionalized. Berisha, despite this political move, seeks to take the reins of the opposition into his own hands and become its all-powerful leader. Continued on page 5
