Many of them, including the parties of the left-wing coalition in power, have for some time been clamoring for an expanded autonomous status for Kosovo in the form of a Republic similar to that of Montenegro. Indeed, Deputy Prime Minister Islami supported the proposal by the European Union Troika to imitate the model of Chechnya and Tyrol. All these “sui generis” positions are being taken at a time when the Albanian Parliament has officially recognized the Independent Republic of Kosovo, established by popular referendum and legitimized by the Assembly of Kaçanik. All positions contrary to the will of the people of Kosovo counterbalance the efforts for independence and encourage Euro-diplomacy toward political utopianism.
