Kaçanik: The will for Kosovo’s independence
September 7, 1990, is the greatest event in Kosovo’s history, since the Constitution of Kaçanik proclaimed the Republic of Kosovo.
Through its political and institutional legitimization, Kosovo sought to achieve international recognition, with the aim of leading the country toward full independence. The will for independence and democracy was expressed through parliamentary elections, in which representatives from all political entities formed the Assembly of Kosovo. Democratic elections have been considered a way to pave the way to peace in Kosovo. They represent an alternative form of sharing power so that an ethnic minority does not violate the rights of an ethnic majority. Although the International Community did not officially recognize the Republic of Kosovo, it defended the elections in Kosovo, thereby defending its own authority. The legitimacy of these elections is accepted as an impetus for democratic developments and for political systems that are responsive to the will [..].
