What was expected has happened. The Albanian Prime Minister, Fatos Nano, has officially come out not only against the will of the opposition political forces, but also against the will of the International Community. While Mr Nano was seeking reconfirmation of his mandate as prime minister from the highest forum of the Socialist Party, not only the joint declaration of the four largest European organizations arrived in Tirana, but also a letter from U.S. President Clinton addressed to Rexhep Meidani. Nano has not acknowledged the existence of the serious crisis in the country or any idea of his departure from government, much less that such a thing should be demonstrated. “It is the Socialists, and only the Socialists, who should govern this country,” the prime minister declared, convinced that the violence of recent days has not brought about the collapse of the institutions at all.
