In new democracies, but also in economically stable systems, pluralism and tolerance will survive or fail depending on whether governance succeeds or not. The well-known Martin Luther King spoke of politicians in these terms: “The tendency of most people is to adopt a point of view that is so ambiguous as to contain everything, and so popular as to include these.” From this perspective, Fatos Nano’s latest idea of creating a single social-democratic force, mainly with the parties in today’s governing coalition, can also be assessed. It is the first time Nano has put forward such an idea, although on many occasions he has found himself in difficult situations. There are many hypotheses about the motives behind this statement. The most widespread view is that Nano uses such tricks to show that he is active in left-wing politics, indeed its main leader, even after the collapse of his government.
