Albanians in Macedonia do not constitute a transit community, but an ethnic group with weight Macedonia cannot be established as a state belonging only to the Macedonians. A preliminary agreement among the Albanian parties, which said “no” to the Macedonians in the last parliamentary elections, secured 25 seats in the next Parliament for the Albanians. This is a historic victory. Albanians in Macedonia, who make up nearly 40% of the population of this former Yugoslav Republic, will now have the opportunity to fight for their rights through legal means as well—rights often violated by the Macedonian state. The two Albanian parties, PPD and PDSH, which will continue to run as a bloc, honoring the agreement even after the elections, will impose their conditions from an unshakable position for as long as the government led by Georgievski needs their votes. The Albanian coalition will even be able to propose an alternative candidate. Continued on page 2
