The test of the challenge

By Neritan ALIBALI The Majko–Berisha contact is being widely regarded by the Albanian media as a significant success for this country’s political class, where hope has lost the chance of survival more than anything else. At first glance, this contact really does seem like something new in Albanian politics. But is it really so? It should not be forgotten that Majko and Berisha have met before at round tables convened by various political parties. But what has been most lacking is precisely the willingness and desire to talk and reach an understanding with one another. In any case, this fact does not diminish the importance of the latest SP–DP contact. But that is all! Albanians, eager for coexistence and understanding, mistakenly confuse this contact with the beginning of a solution to their problems, and of establishing order, security and normality. But no one is entitled to judge it in this way. The only solution for normalizing Albania is not the good humor of two or more politicians, but the establishment and consolidation of democratic institutions in Albania.
