The Bajram holiday, a celebration of coexistence, mutual understanding and peace, was celebrated yesterday in Albania, spreading love, humanity and wisdom among Albanians regardless of religion, but not among politicians. Even on the Great Day of spiritual peace, they remained brutal and embittered. Ultimately, they have no moral right to speak of human love when they have accepted a morally destructive and socially intimidating way of behaving. Politicians connected to crime have brought about the ethical demoralization of society, weakening social cohesion, according to cynical neo-communist calculations that seek only power. The ecological consequences of neo-communist politicians are socially destructive. During the DP’s rule, the effort to achieve complete control over power produced a machine of self-destruction that damaged democratic and human values, as well as social values, and devastated the Albanian environment in such a way and to such an extent that it would, to some degree, risk undermining the system itself. The cause of this self-destructive dynamic was the reprehensible notion that power-retaining goals must justify the abuse of any means. The former rulers, it turned out, had no carefully designed moral leadership platforms capable of establishing the criteria and limits of political power. Their pursuit of total control thus generated a crude power that, above all, was devoted to perpetuating itself. Continued on page 3
