National unity, one of the pillars of the Republican program In striving for a democratic and humanist system, without harming other peoples, Albanians have dreamed of national unity as a legitimate right, historically trampled upon. In the new era, which has only just taken its first steps, alongside the determination of the Albanian people to break forever with totalitarianism and build a democratic state governed by the rule of law that respects universal values, there is also included the sovereignty of the Albanian state, together with the expressed aspiration of Albanianism for identity and national unity, directed toward the goals of peace, understanding and cooperation among peoples. This aspiration expresses a European position and orientation. Democracy would be incomplete without its national dimension. This has also been the firm position of the Republican Party. Modern history has obligations toward Albanians, since the years 1912–1913 established borders that divided the Albanian people. This is acknowledged even by the conscience of present-day Europe, which is not the Europe of that time. In the idea of national unity, European countries would also support us, not because they want to repay past debts and atone for earlier sins, but because they are interested in development in the Balkans and in Europe reaching the final stage of Democracy.
