Milošević eases the position of Albanian Prime Minister Nano.
Faced with the pressure of national responsibility as Prime Minister of Albania—a position in which he has not denied his affinity with the leaders of neighboring countries, especially Greece and, most recently, Serbia—Fatos Nano is being helped by the very head of Serbian nationalism, who accuses Albania of inciting the conflict in Kosovo. In the “philosophy” of Albanian socialists, such an attack gives gentlemen grounds to resign from the diplomatic “attacks” and adopt a “neutral” political stance to defend the country and preserve the status quo of peace. This charade of refusing to respond to the ideology of the nation because of political obligations is opening up a new rift, not only within the PS, but also between the ruling Socialist Party and the other forces across the political spectrum.
