The hour of the final act in the disintegration of Yugoslavia is approaching. According to British sources, Milošević is preparing a “coup d’état” in Montenegro to overthrow Đukanović’s pro-Western government. This is like playing with fire. Montenegro is indeed part of the remaining federation, but if Milošević’s claims become threatening, the great Western powers are likely to reconsider the status of this republic, even to the point of its secession from the federation. It is now clear that the Great Powers, especially the United States, are not giving up on the former Yugoslav region, where nationalist passions are causing major clashes on the geopolitical plane. It is likely that NATO, if Milošević’s sinister plan is confirmed, will seek to launch a military intervention against Yugoslav bases in Montenegro as well, in order to paralyze the Serbian leader’s ultranationalist offensive.
