Kosovo at a “crossroads.” The West is divided
By Agim BAÇI
Kosovo finds itself these days at the greatest crossroads in its history. For some time, the West has been divided between military intervention in Kosovo and accepting peace plans. Meanwhile, Albanian politics, both in Kosovo and in Albania, continues to remain far from being unified. If Albanian politicians managed to resolve their disagreements among themselves, Albanians would at least know more clearly what the main obstacle is to achieving independence, or, more accurately, to a normal solution to the Kosovo problem. But such a thing seems increasingly distant. Thus, although he has been away from Belgrade for days and has met many of the leading figures in international politics, Ibrahim Rugova’s final outlook on resolving the problem has still not been recognized. There is little hope of a quick agreement between him and Hashim Thaçi’s camp, since the latter has abandoned the path of remaining quite radical in its position toward Rugova’s camp. This uncertainty about the possibility of unification is made even more difficult by the fact that those who want to unify (that is, Albanian politicians) are themselves still unclear. Thus the possibility of a unified political position remains complicated; before it can be achieved, it must unify Albanian factors, while [the source text is corrupted here] unify the diplomatic policy desired by Russia or China, which have given no indication that they are working toward closing the lines to Belgrade.
