Serbs fear punishment

By Arben ILLAZI Thousands of Serb civilians are trying to leave Kosovo, fearing that Albanian refugees may take revenge when they return. NATO has stated that their presence will be protected by international peacekeepers, but they are not convinced they will escape punishment. Their crimes in Kosovo have shocked those of the Serbian army and police. The Serb people were swept up in powerful ethnic hostility, unable to reason about how they could avoid imperial territorial ambitions and achieve peace and democracy. Thousands of Serb civilians were inflamed by Milosheviç’s propaganda, serving an unprecedented genocide against Albanians by paramilitaries in Kosovo. Although they were blind tools of the Serbian regime, their crimes are, to a great extent, intolerable; but NATO has taken them under its protection because an entire people cannot be punished. Ultimately, it is Milosheviç who influenced the collective psyche of the Serb people. For the West, what matters most is the condemnation of communist dogmas, and the institutionalization and consolidation of stable processes. With him, Jaqbë?
