Adem Jashari, the legend of Kosovo, never laid down his weapons

After the Allied forces’ victory in the war in Kosovo, extremism in the countries bordering Serbia has grown even stronger. Various anti-American and anti-NATO expressions have become widespread. The era of pan-Slavist nationalism has not only failed to end, but has been revived. A threat from the mysterious organization “Awakening of Macedonia” spoiled the mood of Clinton’s visit to Macedonia. Extremist nationalism with chauvinist tendencies aims to defend the traditional Balkan concept through a ritualistic anachronism that can even give rise to criminal tendencies. Although America has committed itself to rebuilding the Balkans, countries such as Macedonia have an inadequate spiritual vision of becoming part of Western democracy. President Gligorov declared during his meeting with President Clinton that “Macedonia is a model of multiethnic democracy”. In reality, although artificially so, the Macedonian state is a selfish state. The localist spirit has joined with selfishness and led to the fabrication of a so-called “terrorist assassination attempt” against Mr. Clinton, by an organization that does not exist and which may well be a ploy by the Macedonian state itself. America must understand clearly that some of the demons of history in the Balkans are still out of control. The International Community must now begin the battle for peace, exhausting the wounds of ethnic violence, but it would find it difficult to accomplish this great mission. Continued, page 3
