The former Albanian prime minister, former chairman of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, arrived in Vlora yesterday carrying on his shoulders the guilt of having greatly deceived Albanians over the return of the money they had invested in pyramid schemes. Just two years ago, it was the former Socialist leader himself who told the outraged people of Vlora in Flag Square, after they had lost their money, that they would get it all back. Yesterday, however, in the sports palace building, speaking to a smaller crowd, he said that he was working to get it back to them. Meanwhile, the opposition repeatedly used Nano’s promise in large letters as evidence of a major deception. The truth is now becoming entirely clear: yesterday, the only person who had accepted the promise failed to tell the people of Vlora and all Albanians that he had deceived them. Saying so would have been more honest and more acceptable for a politician who claims he intends to remain in politics rather than be forced out of the game. The “golden” period of Nano’s government will be remembered for nothing besides the great deception over the money and the increase in serious crime. During that period, corruption, trafficking and smuggling flourished to the utmost. Throughout the arteries of the Albanian state, the strongest were those who set up customs posts and exploited important institutions.
