Yesterday, at its extraordinary assembly, the PD declared that it would change its political vision and even make changes to its program. A normal statement, but to change your vision, you have to change the social alternatives. These alternatives are the principal regulatory element of the entire field of politics. The PD’s economic program contains elements of socialist and social-democratic ideology that have made this party’s political identity doubtful. Almost most of the economic reforms during the PD’s time in government were carried out according to the social-democratic model, bringing confusion and major fluctuations in the first stage of the transition, and even casting doubt on the will to embrace capitalism. Now that the Democrats feel disappointed and sidelined, they should enter the new process with a new mindset and not with populist distortions. Electoral obligations cannot be resolved in a revolutionary manner. The PD must answer itself with new concepts concerning the relationships between socialism and capitalism, conservative and progressive, left and right, cosmopolitanism and nationalism, democracy and dictatorship.
