Outside any responsibility, for Udrja to be “moderate” is seen by the socialists as an achievement of the Wednesday creation of the Meta government on the 11th. The Meta government does not know how to govern, convinced that it holds the fate of the Albanians in its hands, yet it is constantly thirsty for power at any price. Their main concern is to govern with a limitation imposed by the PS’s demand to have the number of government cabinet posts increased from the outset. Instead of strengthening institutions, the socialist inclusions in this left-wing government are attempts to limit free political competition. These developments are an indication of the crisis of the majority and not a way out. The hand-to-hand style of government also illustrates the fact that the socialists are not interested in the standards of institutions, but in the balances between groups. In this sense, Meta finds it even harder to lead a cabinet where each minister is seen as a representative of a group and not of a state policy. The new government is more the product of deals than of a clear governing project. Albania will continue to be submerged in this backward equation as long as politics treats the state as private property. With this logic, the selection of cabinet figures continues. The name of Besnik Mustafaj for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and that of Paskal Milo for another post show that more internal compromise is being sought than reform. The Meta government may survive temporarily, but it will find it difficult to win public trust. However young it may be, it seems old in the way it does politics.
