Interview with the chairman of the Party for Equality, Right and Integration, Arben Imami, on the problems in Kosovo and Albania-West relations
Mr. Imami, and Mr. Mediu’s statement last night, what is it, the opposition withdrawn to the CEC agreement on Kosovo concentration? Is your candidacy included in the subject? Do you have the chance to carry out political unification in the constitution Central Commission?
Under the circumstances in which an electoral process has begun, the entire political community is interested in building an agreement with the political forces in order to ensure good governance of the country. Some members of the CEC have focused their attention on solving technical problems, bearing above all in mind Western standards. This does not mean that there is no possibility of broader political dialogue, but such a matter must be handled with responsibility and seriousness.
The electoral law, which was made by the two main political forces, PD and PS, has always had the element of competition within it. I do not believe that Albania today should accept double standards. On the contrary, we need a system in which the rules are clear and apply equally to everyone.
In his statement, Mediu has implied that the opposition on Kosovo concentration will increasingly be linked to regional developments and to relations with the West. Naturally, the events in Kosovo have placed Albania before a major test. But our response must be institutional and not rhetorical.
We need functional institutions and an administration that respects the law. Only in this way can the country gain credibility with international partners.
If there is one lesson from the recent period, it is that Albanian politics must move out of narrow exclusionary schemes and make room for equal participation.
That is also why we insist on the principles of equality before the law, competence, and equal opportunities.
