The serious concern expressed by the Deputy Minister of Public Order Ilir Kasa regarding yesterday’s murder of the well-known businessman Bedri Daci, right in the heart of the capital, was justified. Under extraordinary pressure across all police units, not only in Tirana but also in other districts of the country, detailed checks were carried out throughout the evening in order to uncover and arrest the perpetrators of this extremely serious murder. As is known, the investigation initially focused on the revenge theory, bearing in mind that 15 journalists were killed during the 1997 unrest. Indeed, this murder had its roots in those events, since it has been learned that Bedri Daci’s brother had been killed by an armed group. People close to the victim state that he had decided to take revenge. According to sources from the investigative group, there are several other leads as well, but they are being pursued cautiously. In any case, the main one appears to be the clash between several groups among themselves. It cannot yet be said with certainty, but the police’s intensive searches have focused their work more on identifying a hired killer group that had come from Vlora. Its members are believed to have left the capital quickly, but without being caught. The police seems to have been informed upon[?] at the moment when the electronic media reported the event. Other sources state that the perpetrators followed the victim for about 20 minutes from the area of the former Kinostudio to near the “Piazza” bar, and perhaps even farther.
At a police checkpoint somewhere near Tapiza, the burned “Benz” car with Tirana plates, which is believed to have been used by the perpetrators of the murder, was found. The “cordon” began in the Krujë district, after information that the perpetrators were moving in that direction in a new black-and-yellow automatic car. In the car found by the police, two Kalashnikov-type firearms were discovered. All checkpoints were ordered to thoroughly inspect every car moving at speed in the evening, with particular focus on the Tirana-Durrës area. The car with license plate TR 7668 E, suspected of having been used by the perpetrators, had blood on the rear floor and was abandoned in the square near Tapiza Bridge. The Forensic Medicine expert group carefully examined the vehicle in order to find traces that could identify the perpetrators. Last night, their identification had still not been achieved. * For more, read page 7
