TIRANA - The story of Luigjeta, the 11-year-old girl abducted in Berat and taken to Italy by speedboat by a women trafficker, has begun to become a matter of concern for the Italian authorities as well. Luigjeta was born on 8 July 1982 in Berat and lived with her grandmother. “Gazeta Shqiptare” was the first to write about her story on 1 May, triggering a strong reaction. Yesterday the RAI office in Tirana took an interest in the case and collected testimony from family members. According to the first information, the girl left Berat at the end of April and is suspected to have been transported to the Italian coast.

The newspaper also mentions the trafficker’s name and the possible crossing route. Luigjeta’s relatives say they have received little information and fear she may have been drawn into prostitution networks. The Albanian police have informed their Italian counterparts. Tonight, according to RAI sources, her story is expected to be covered in a television programme, with the aim of raising public awareness and finding the girl. The authorities are verifying various testimonies, while the family is asking for her immediate return to Albania.
