He is the highest-ranking military official from Bonn to visit Albania since the recent political changes that marked the end of the communist dictatorship. Volker Ruehe arrived in Tirana yesterday in order to intensify relations between the two armies, relations that began developing more intensively after Albanian Defence Minister Safet Zhulali’s visit to Bonn in 1995.

BARI - Six Albanian girls secure the future of an Italian monastery.
Santa Chiara in Bisceglie (Bari) was at risk of closing; at present, only four nuns of quite advanced age remained there, but the arrival of six Albanian girls has ensured that life at the monastery will continue. They come from several villages in Albania, are in their twenties and thirties, and all six have expressed the desire to devote themselves to prayer. Thus, two years ago, it was Sister Candida, 85, who met them and accompanied them to Italy, to the Santa Chiara monastery. There, the girls learned Italian and religious customs. “They are beautiful and simple girls,” says Sister Candida. “Faith had long been kept in their hearts. They pray a lot, work and embroider. Meanwhile, four more girls from Albania who wish to become nuns have arrived at the Santa Chiara monastery, and we are expecting others to come as well.” They were received in a ceremony attended by the Archbishop of Trani, priests, seminarians and many worshippers who had come to Bisceglie from Bari, Barletta, Andria and Naples. “Now,” says the devoted Sister Candida, “life in our monastery will continue.”
