TIRANA - Examination of suspicious signatures. This is one of the filters the Central Commission will apply to phantom signatures. A graphic examination in the forensic laboratories will establish whether the 400 signatures for a candidate are genuine or whether there are also shadow signatures behind them. A civil registry examination will also verify the authenticity of identity cards. The Central Commission is calling on the civil registry office to take an “X-ray” of the passports’ validity. These were two of the proposals put forward yesterday during marathon meetings at the central electoral headquarters. It seems that the small parties are mainly the ones suffering from irregularities in signatures and passports.

TIRANA - Sometimes a simple document can have adverse consequences, especially during a parliamentary election period.
The clearest example is that of two journalists from “Zëri i Popullit,” reportedly candidates for seats in the Socialist list, who in recent days have themselves been at the center of the issue because the Central Election Commission has deemed the documents they submitted “irregular.” This has not yet been fully confirmed, but it is highly likely that two of the best-known names at “ZP”

TIRANA - The cases concerning genocide are expected to be tried after the elections. The lawyers’ tactic of requesting that the judicial panel be disqualified from the proceedings has caused yet another trial against them to be left in limbo. Yesterday morning, Judge Gjin Gjoni was forced to take the case file and postpone the trial after the request he had directed was rejected by the lawyers of the accused Pino Komi, Qiriako Mihali and Sulejman Bushati. Three days earlier, the same request had “blocked” the trial against Foto Çami, Prokop Murron, Muho Asllanit, Dilaver Bengasit and Gaqo Neshos.

TIRANA - One of the most endearing personalities in the history of Albanian Television has died in recent days.
Petrit Leka had been away from the small screen for some time, ill in his final days like many pensioners; nevertheless, many people remembered him. It seems the key to his personal success was a quality not many people have, including those who work in television. Petrit knew how to laugh, a quality that was very rare at the time. Every night, before we watched “Piktini në Spital,” “Xhemeli,” or “Të tjerët në Ekran”—films that used to bring him to us with humor, now and then—came his forecast and the affection Petrit showed us as he told us what the weather would be like the next day. “A high-pressure weather front is approaching the country and this will bring such-and-such consequences...” Many people did not pay much attention to the complicated maps Petrit explained, but they noticed his face, which radiated kindness. In the end, everyone understood: the next day they could go out, there would be no rain, and Petrit always said this with a sense of joy that showed on his face. This happiness, the joy that the following day would be clear, will forever remain the symbol of the “weatherman.”

At last, Legisi has managed to obtain a certificate confirming the purity of his record. “It was simply a mix-up in the list drawn up by the commission,” his lawyer said. It is understood that what had disqualified Ndre(k) Legisi was an extra “K” in his name, which apparently led him to be confused with someone else.
