Nano and the leadership: now open warfare

The imprisoned leader: “The four must step down.” The polemic opens the archives The chairman’s words reach the delegates from his cell. Harsh criticism of the policies pursued by his deputies: “They have blocked me” Three years of correspondence between Bënça and Tirana are revealed. Dokle denounces: “He had ordered the purging of Majko, Zeneli...” Berisha sends a message: “You cannot reform yourselves. Disband and form a new party.” The Socialists refuse to have it read in the hall TIRANA - The Socialist Party Congress has turned into an arena of heated debate between chairman Nano on one side and his party’s leadership on the other. After the opening address by Namik Dokle, the chairman gave an overview of Socialist activity. Then the reading of Nano’s report, sent from Bënça, set the accusations and counteraccusations alight. “They have shown no desire to cooperate and have not understood the content of the motion,” Nano criticized the four members of the leadership. Nano also made other criticisms of the foreign policy pursued by the SP. Particularly surprising was the imprisoned leader’s statement about manipulation by the leadership at the Tirana Conference. Nano described the latter as “a stain of shame in the political history of the SP.” But there was no shortage of counter-reactions in the hall. Prominent names in the Socialist Party, such as Dokle, Agolli and Musai, pointed out the chairman’s mistakes in the hall. “In his correspondence,” Dokle explained, “Nano called for the purging of several figures within the party.” On page 3 Yesterday during the Socialist Congress. Saranda, the key to drug trafficking

Yesterday during the Socialist Congress drug trafficking From Athens, the confirmation of the narcotics figures ATHENS - “Saranda, the city of drugs.” In recent days, the Greek Ministry of the Interior has published figures on the trafficking of narcotic substances between Albania and Greece. More than 1 ton of cannabis was seized during 1995 and these months of ’96. Numerous cases also involved heroin. The largest was the seizure at Kakavijë, on a scheduled bus: 20 kilograms of heroin. The same quantity was discovered just a few days ago in a Mercedes with Fier license plates. Cooperation with the Albanian authorities and sophisticated equipment at the border are being used to stop drugs from crossing: measures along the route to curb trafficking, which is expanding day by day. Coup by deceit to seize the village elder’s seal

RARE CASE / He turns signatures for water into votes BERAT — “Do you want a water supply system in the village? Then sign my list.” The chairman of the Democratic Party in a village in Berat obtained around 150 signatures this way, but they had nothing at all to do with water. After modifying the list, its author submitted it to the police station. The document stated that it was a list of heads of household seeking his “appointment” as village elder. “The incumbent Socialist village elder must hand over the seal to me,” the claimant told the blue-uniformed officers. But this did not happen, because the deception was quickly uncovered, and the claimant even put his position as chairman of the village’s Democratic Party at risk. It has only been a few days since, in one of the rural villages of Berat, the dream of “power” produced a curious turn of events: the local DP chairman asked his fellow villagers to sign a list which, he told them, would “give” them a water supply system in the village. With a country disposition, they lined up and, when asked, did not hesitate to sign. But the party soon learned the truth. The party chairman avoided facing his “opponent” and his fellow villagers. It is reported that, disappointed by the deception they had suffered, they protested at the commune office. Meanwhile, the would-be village elder may now lose his local party position as well.
