TIRANA - Sudja has gone from paradise to hell. From being the richest woman in Albania to struggling to pay her lawyer. Detained at midnight on Wednesday, only yesterday was it possible to provide the now-bankrupt famous female moneylender with a defense lawyer. Hysni Peti—that is her lawyer’s name—was appointed by the prosecution on its own initiative, as he was needed to review the materials that arrived at the court yesterday together with her, for consideration of the security measure. “I don’t have a single lek anymore, neither in the bank nor at home. I am bankrupt.” This is what the female moneylender declared yesterday, as the judges ordered her detention in prison. She recounted her whole adventure with people, how her fraud began and grew, and how it was only after four years that she learned it was called a pyramid scheme. Now stripped of every kind of asset—she has no real estate that could be seized in favor of the clients—Sudja has become a wretched woman, like the hundreds and thousands of people who fell victim to her game.
