Brokaj under surveillance: “He planned the killings in Vlora”

A serious accusation against the Socialist: “Ties to Hakmarrja” TIRANA - The Tirana Prosecutor’s Office has opened a bombshell case against the opposition to investigate everything that has happened in recent weeks in many Albanian cities. So far, criminal proceedings have been opened only against Zabit Brokaj, a member of the Socialist Party’s Steering Committee, who is accused of “having had ties to the terrorist organization Hakmarrja Shqiptare e Drejtësisë. He also led the protest in Vlora.” This is the preliminary charge formulated by the Tirana Prosecutor’s Office against the Socialist leader, who will appear before the judges in Tirana today. Vlora, police return to the city

Thousands in Fier: “Let’s march to Tirana” VLORA - The latest information is being sought in Vlora... The newly appointed police station chief has stated that he will not use force against his fellow citizens’ peaceful protests. Demonstrations by the people of Vlora have resumed and have now entered their eighth day. There have been no incidents, and citizens are gradually returning to the normal rhythm of life. At midday, opposition leaders founded a branch of the Forum for Democracy in the city. At the Forum’s first meeting, a 12-point petition addressed to Tirana was drafted. It calls for special investigations into the pyramid schemes and the killing and wounding of Vlora citizens, and asks Berisha not to seek the presidency again. Mass protests have also continued in the city of Fier. Thousands of people marched through the city streets for hours and even called for setting off for Tirana. Their protest was led by local PS and PAD leaders. On pages 4, 9 From the England - Italy match, 0-1 (Photo: REUTERS)

Gunshots in the dark: policeman killed

VLORA - Gunshots again in Vlora. But this time, apparently, not over the collapse of the pyramid schemes. Yesterday afternoon, a policeman was killed in the troubled city. A burst of automatic gunfire followed by a pistol shot left Shezai Zani, a police officer in the Property Guarding Section, dead. The motives for this crime are still unknown, but an investigation has been opened immediately and is proceeding intensively. Zani was shot near his home. He was leaving his house at around 18:00, dressed in civilian clothes, to visit a neighbor of his, 100 meters from the apartment building. This was precisely the moment seized by the killers, who fired 7 bullets into his body and then shot him once more with a small-caliber pistol. The killers disappeared into the darkness, and no one, at least up to last night, could offer any explanation for the motive behind the murder. The gunshots were heard across the city. People were protesting at the time, on Saturday, but after two days of turmoil, the shots did not seem to make an ordinary day any different.
