ANKONA - Fake Albanian lekë from Berlin. In Ancona, Italy, a German man was detained with a sum of millions of lekë. The financial police of this city carried out the seizure at a port. The money was hidden aboard the car and was destined for Albania. The man had been waiting before entering the Italian port, where he was to hand it over to Albanians. “A perfect forgery,” the Italian authorities said, without providing further details about the German man who was detained. The money was in 100-lekë banknotes and had been placed inside several black boxes, marked on the rear seat of the vehicle. The German made no attempt to defend himself; he preferred not to say a word about the way the money had been evacuated from Berlin. In his car, along with the money, there were also 25 sheets for testing the stamp ink, to verify the quality of the forgery. He is now being held in Ancona prison and will be under the supervision of prosecutor Irene Billiotta, who has seized the money and the vehicle. The amount of 3 million lekë is the largest quantity of counterfeit Albanian money ever seized.
