NATO threatens Miloseviçi the pragmatist

ANDI BEJTA The hour is dead and gloomy. Miloseviç still has a better chance than Milutin. NATO needs time to gather itself and find common ground. Within its structures, especially the military ones, there are different countries that view a possible attack on Serbia with skepticism. At least this became clear during yesterday’s debate in Brussels. That gives Miloseviç a golden opportunity in the next two or three days. That may be enough for him to clear Drenica and the “hottest” areas of Kosovo in order to later present the allies with a new face. The statements by NATO officials about 50 targets and 50 aircraft ready for intervention, as well as the expressed determination of the United States and England, place Miloseviç before a serious challenge. However, no one seems ready to act immediately. And if the intervention is delayed, then he will have gained time. To clear the terrain, to drive out more refugees and to impose a policy of faits accomplis. On page 8

Education officials fleece the teachers

ARJAN ÇANI Once again, things are not going right. A dozen difficulties have become routine at the start of every school year. Low salaries and delays in paying them have pushed teachers to live on the edge of survival. The lack of textbooks, books and material resources has turned teaching into a daily struggle. Educational authorities have promised a lot and done little. All this is already known. But what remains intolerable is the way the teacher continues to be treated with contempt, as an unnecessary person, as a burden, as someone who must only stay silent and endure. In many schools, money has been demanded, pressure has been applied and forms of humiliation have been used that have nothing to do with the dignity of a knowledge worker. If the state cannot protect the teacher, then the future of children is not protected either. On page 4
