Mirosh SAKO The return of metamit as a political factor at the end of this century in Yugoslavia has been regarded by the international media as a sunrise of relatively auspicious promise. The discovery of the mass slaughter in Racet, Kosovo, among the most shocking, on the eve of the Christian millennium, is an event that recalls for all European civilization the gruesome events of the Second World War, the extermination of the villages of Lidice and Borovë. This was why international humanitarian opinion, represented by OSCE observers, was stirred and seeks to carry this awareness over to the institutions and states of the civilized world. The very fact that the killings are especially among the unarmed shows that they are based on systematic premeditation. Contrary to the promise offered by the end of this century, such a bloody event in Kosovo, in the name of the most irrational aims, self-justified by the hallucinatory politics of the heirs of the most notorious anti-Albanians Cviij-Georgievic-Cubrillovic, is institutionalizing cruelty on an unprecedented scale, even though practice is proving the greatest failure of this century’s politics here, in Southeastern Europe. Without wishing to force this discussion into an emotional political stance, we would like to offer a suggestion of interest for a more active foreign policy. Italy, together with the USA, is an initiator of the formation of the “Friends of Albania” group. Nevertheless, on the Kosovo issue, various initiatives have come from Albania’s friend, the USA, from France, England, and Germany, to resolve the Kosovo issue, but not from Italy. Therefore, at this moment it would be essential to encourage the activation of the originators of D’Alema’s Adriatic initiative, and of prominent Italian politicians Prodi, Berlusconi, Fini, etc., in moving toward diplomatic solutions, including military diplomacy—that of NATO. In this context, it seems to us that it is unforgivable for the political parties, who have such a good friend in Italy among the political forces, to be unable to raise awareness among that public opinion of the Continued on page 2
