COMMENTARY The bombs that have been falling on Yugoslavia for more than two days have marked the beginning of the epilogue to the process of a new geopolitical division of the region, which began ten years ago. Losing the arms race, followed by the fall of the Berlin Wall, marked the end of the Cold War, which, like every war, has its defeated and its victors. In essence, nothing much has changed since the Middle Ages, which the Balkans experienced to the bone during the time of Byzantium and under Turkish occupation. The only difference is that the defeated must now concede not only territory but also regional markets. After the collapse of the Russian empire, the fate of the Albanians—the great historical opportunity for the Albanians—is that their national interests are aligned with American global interests. Geopolitics has now begun to change. The Yalta Conference, during which the victors of the Second World War determined their spheres of influence and even the disputed borders between states, is now merely a historical date. Another world war, this time not fought with weapons, has ended. Its victors, the USA, have acquired the right to redraw the map of the world.
