THE LOSS OF EKATERINA’S LOVERS

Tired after a press conference in October of last year, the American ambassador in Macedonia, Kris Hill, said: “Believe me, we are fighting against the Ottoman Empire.” Diplomatic etiquette prevented him from stating the truth more cynically. We are fighting against the lovers of Ekaterina of Russia.
What truth is summed up in this cynicism?
One of Ekaterina’s greatest dreams was world domination. The simplest way to achieve this aim was to possess the Dardanelles. From a military standpoint, such possession presupposed the end of the English monopoly over the seas and the replacement of England’s role as a superpower. By an absolutely similar method, the sultans who took possession of Istanbul after 1453 had gradually sidelined the powerful maritime empire of that time, Venice.
