TESTIMONY By Biljana Srbljanoviç * Today at the bakery, while I was queuing to buy bread, the news was playing on the radio. The official news, the regime’s information, read by a presenter with a frozen voice, could be summed up in one phrase: “We are winning on all fronts.” No one with even a little common sense could take this news seriously, made up as it is of clichés and prefabricated phrases repeated solemnly as if that could turn falsehood into truth. And they get everything wrong, even the weather forecast. Just as it was my turn to buy rolls (all the other kinds of bread had already sold out), I heard the unmistakable jingle of Radio B92 on that same radio: News, listen carefully! B92 was the best-known independent radio station. We followed its closure live on the last night before the bombings, when the police arrived, arrested the publisher and seized everything they found. The closure of this media outlet of independent Serbia, perhaps the most important one, marked the beginning of fierce censorship and the regime’s terror against all the media.
