From Prishtina Carlo Bollino From an unidentified location in Kosovo, a radio operator introduces himself using the codename “GH5” and transmits messages and information. From another area, “Car Lazari 58708” reports that “22 houses have been set on fire” around him and sends the news to “those on the council.” They are Serbs, speak Serbian, and communicate continuously, 24 hours a day, through a widespread radio network that uses the same frequency band used until a few weeks ago by the Yugoslav border police. Those who discovered them were several Albanian radio amateurs, who entrusted the ANSA news agency with a copy of the magnetic recordings on which the conversations had been recorded. “We don’t know what they are changing, or whether this is a civilian or military structure,” the radio amateurs explain, “but we are sure that the radio signal is quite strong, which indicates that they are using a professional system. We have also discovered that they are present throughout Kosovo, that they are able to contact Belgrade, and that they send coded messages.” German and American soldiers from the KFOR forces dismantled two radio stations controlled by Serb civilians last week in Rahovec and Shkëndera.
