BREAKING NEWS Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Janis Kranidhiotis died last night together with his son and at least two journalists accompanying him. The Falcon aircraft in which they were travelling crashed near Bucharest. According to the Italian news agency ANSA, the tragedy was caused by air pockets. The plane plunged from an altitude of 7,000 metres and hit the ground a few seconds later. Greek television stations were the first to report the news, which was subsequently also carried by ANSA. They confirmed the deaths of Simitis’s deputy and his son, as well as at least one journalist and the crews of two journalists. There were 9–10 people on board, and at least two or three survived. The plane departed from Athens Airport at 20:13 and, according to calculations, was due to arrive in Bucharest at 22:35. The journey was cut short, but the exact number of victims has not yet been confirmed. Until 23:15, the Greek government had not commented on the news, while at 23:41 an official at the Greek embassy in Romania confirmed the tragedy.
