Edi Rama: The effects of unemployment By LORENC RABETA Based on the preliminary da- tha from the 2011 Population and Housing Census, pub- lished yesterday by the In- stitute of Statistics, it turns out that Albania’s popula- tion is currently 2,831,741 inhabitants. It is noted that the population figure in 2011 has decreased by 7.7% over these ten years. Meanwhile, the population from the 2001 Census was 3,069,275. According to In- stat, the main reasons for the decrease in population are large-scale emigration and the drop in birth rates. An- other highly significant piece of data, which together with the population figure has been commented on by po- litical and social actors in the country, concerns the fact that for the first time in Albania the larger part of the population is now settled in cities, and no longer in vil- lages. “For the first time in the history of censuses con- ducted in Albania, the pop- ulace living in urban areas is larger than that in rural areas.
