In an overcrowded room, where security forces stood out, only three days before the fourth anniversary of the Gërdec tragedy, the Tirana court delivered its verdict against 29 defendants accused of responsibility for the grave incident of 15 March 2008, thus bringing to an end one of the most sensational trials in the country. For about 15 minutes, judge Ridvan Hado read only the charges and the sentences for the defendants, many of whom were acquitted while the others received 94 years in prison. The former director of MEICO, Ylli Pinari, was sentenced to 18 years in prison on charges of violation of workplace rules, destruction of property, and abuse of office. The court acquitted Pinari regarding the charge of falsifying documents, and the charge of abuse of office in collaboration was also dismissed.
