The Minister of the Interior,
Saimir Tahiri, declared yes-
terday before the deputies of
the parliamentary Law
Committee that under the
new law “On the use of
weapons,” the State Police
has the right to shoot at mi-
nors, women and the elder-
ly if they endanger the lives
of police officers or of any
citizen. However, Tahiri
clarified, under the new law
the Police is forbidden from
using weapons against pro-
testers, even as a warning,
a consequence of the events
of 21 January.
“The old law specified
that weapons could not be
used against minors, against
women and the elderly,
whereas under the new law
this criterion also falls inso-

may present a potential,
imminent, real danger to the
life of the police employee
or of any citizen. This
means that under the new
law, the weapon must be
used against anyone who
puts at risk the life of any
citizen or the life of the po-
