The amount stolen from the country’s most important financial institution by the two former employees Ardian Bitraj and Mimoza Bruzia is estimated at nearly 600 million lek, or around 4.2 million euro. The suspects Bitraj and Bruzia appeared yesterday before the Tirana court, and the security measure of “arrest in prison” was imposed against them during a hearing held in complete secrecy. The theft scandal was uncovered precisely at the time when the money that had been withdrawn from circulation or was about to be put into circulation was to be destroyed. A commission set up by the bank, which was to verify the amount of cash in stock, was informed of the shocking fact that millions of lek were missing from the cash desk, by the head of the Cash Stock sector himself, Ardian Bitraj, who admitted that he had been the one who took the money.
