The circle of people suspected in the huge theft at the Bank of Albania is widening. Not only is the amount of money stolen believed to reach 1 billion lek (10 million USD), with the main suspect Ardian Bitraj, head of the Cash Stock sector, having admitted to taking at least 7 billion, but suspicions go further, that behind this scandal there are other people, even at high levels within the Bank of Albania. Investigators suspect that the two employees had other accomplices in carrying out this crime, considered among the gravest in 24 years, since it happened precisely in the central financial institution, where security should be at the highest levels. “We have strong suspicions that Ardian Bitraj is lying regarding the fact that he spent the money in casinos,” said a prosecution source.
