This is the conclusion reached by the three experts appointed by the Tirana Prosecutor’s Office, who carried out a new inventory in the Issue Department, after the serious suspicions held by the prosecution that more money could have been stolen than the amount declared by the Bank of Albania itself, just days after the scandal was made public on 21 July 2014. In fact, it was Ardian Bitraj himself, the former head of the Stock Cash Desk and the man who single-handedly took responsibility for the massive theft from the Treasury, who, at the moment he turned himself in, stated that the amount of money he had stolen was a little more than 700 million lek, of which 600 million were new banknotes expected to be put into circulation, while nearly 120 million were notes withdrawn from circulation and awaiting destruction.
