On Wednesday and Thursday (27 and 28 January), in the city of Lezhë, the large gatherings of people seeking to leave for the Italian coast continued. We are talking about a total number of 8,000 to 10,000 people of different ages and professions. They are trying to leave for Italy at any cost, whether organized or individually, by boat or by any other watercraft. Their departure from Lezhë began mainly on Monday with the crowd breaking toward Shëngjin. At that moment, late on Wednesday evening, near Shëngjin, with a heavy fire of weapons and flares and columns of air lights, the police were deployed and blocked the roads, but this several times did not prevent the march of feet, everywhere violent, to seize the boats at any cost. People's safety is greater than the authorities' anxiety. In Lezhë there is movement to check all watercraft on the shore. This situation required the Minister of Internal Affairs himself and the chief of police to come. The general director of police is also present. In the villages of Lezhë, by telephone, an unofficial notice is circulating stating that, starting Wednesday night, the curfew is lifted. In every village center there is a group of policemen and armed civilians, who stop any movement by bicycle or on foot. Meanwhile, in the center of Lezhë and near the hospital, near the Mati bridge and at the border patrols in Shëngjin, there is extraordinary control. Likewise, tension reached a peak when, during the reinforcement of the checkpoints, police forces opened fire with automatic weapons and a citizen having lunch in the Shëngjin restaurant, Lekë Gjikeli, was seriously wounded. He is staying in the Lezhë hospital. Later, the entrances by boat toward Shëngjin were also blocked. The mourning flag was raised. On every private and public vehicle in Lezhë, including the vehicles of institutions and the governing bodies, an armed policeman or civilian has been placed. This is an action organized by the Ministry of the Interior under government orders to stop the exodus at any cost, and not through information and persuasion. From 4 p.m. on Thursday, all businesses in Lezhë close and their activity is interrupted. They are controlled by the police. Lezhë and Shëngjin have all been blocked. Both cities, Lezhë and Shëngjin, are surrounded. Neither vehicles nor anyone has the right to enter or leave Lezhë and Shëngjin without police permission. According to reports, there are several young people who have set off toward the Adriatic to cross into Italy. The Italian news agency ANSA has reported that the city of Brindisi is on alert, expecting 3,500 to 4,000 Albanians on Thursday evening. On Thursday at midnight, more than 250 arrests were made in Lezhë and sentences were imposed. The police have set up strong checkpoints around Lezhë as far as Rubik, where all vehicles are checked and entry and exit are blocked.

The only official responsible found in this state of alert is the director of Albanian TV, who by telephone has issued general and specific orders that no special program be aired about the events taking place in Lezhë. Even the radio gave no news about the situation. According to reports, several young people were arrested near the Mati bridge with the intention of leaving for Italy. Likewise, the government is preparing a special force to stop Albanians from leaving through the port of Shëngjin. This force will include a large number of soldiers and policemen.
