The wife of the victim, who was wounded on Sunday by gunfire from Greek police officers at the Greek-Albanian border crossing, died on Thursday, it was announced near the hospital in Ioannina, in northwestern Greece, where she had been admitted. Mirela Aziz, 22, was wounded in the head “by a ricochet bullet” fired by the police “while hitting a car that was trying to enter the area,” declared the Greek minister of public order. According to the official version, the incident occurred after a police patrol was hit by gunfire from this Albanian car. Police responded to the fire and intercepted the vehicle after a chase. A Greek officer was lightly wounded a week earlier during an exchange of gunfire in disputed circumstances between Greek and Albanian police patrols. Anila Doda, the victim’s sister, said the incident took place on Greek territory, while official Tirana considered it to have happened on its own territory. Greek police apparently claimed, on the other hand, that two Albanian clandestine migrants had entered an Albanian vehicle, and that the police then opened fire, according to police, on a group of eight clandestines, during which they managed to escape. Since the beginning of the week, in what appears to be a known case, nine Greeks have been killed on the border by a group of Albanian clandestine migrants expelled to the Greek border area. According to Greek television, around 6,000 clandestine migrants have been returned to Albania since the beginning of the month.
