SP delegations individual rights are violated in Albania, if political opponents are convicted in Albania, if journalists are imprisoned in Albania, then no one can say that Albania, with its current leadership, deserves to be admitted to the Council of Europe. The issue of Albanian gold, stolen by the Germans from Italian banks during the war and later taken to Germany, was discussed in 1948 by the Tripartite Commission for the Restitution of Monetary Gold, consisting of Britain, France and the US. As is known, all three great powers had to decide whether to return the Albanian gold, which today is worth around 13 million dollars (at the time it was stolen, its value was higher, but depreciation has brought it down to this figure). However, the Corfu Channel incident in October 1946 and the Hague court ruling in 1949 blocked its return. The British were responsible for the blockage. The French were the first to approve the return of Albanian monetary gold to Albania. The British later also gave their approval, so the only thing awaited for this matter to be finally resolved is the Americans’ response. With the official document signed yesterday in Tirana by Deputy Prime Minister Dylber Vrioni and US Ambassador Joseph Lake, the gold should finally be returned to Albania.
