Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister said yesterday that his country opposes Albania’s admission to NATO, as well as that of other Central and Eastern European countries. He said yesterday that his country opposes the enlargement of the North Atlantic organization because it runs counter to his country’s national interests. “We have differing views about NATO’s future,” the Russian diplomat said, since NATO’s enlargement could lead to a new era of division on our continent. If the countries of Central and Eastern Europe join NATO, this will not be in Europe’s best interests, the senior Russian diplomat said yesterday.

A 30-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman are killed in 10 shots near the Artificial Lake
A bloody afternoon yesterday in the hills of the capital’s Artificial Lake. Around 10 shots, heard indistinctly by distant witnesses; a “fuori strada” car overturned and covered in blood; a 37-year-old woman dead at the scene, inside the car, and a 30-year-old man with the same fate, just a few metres outside it. These were some of the signs of the macabre scene recorded in the first moments after officers from Police District No. 2 arrived at the scene, just a few minutes after the tragedy. Although the victims have been identified, the perpetrator remains a mystery. Since there are several leads, an intensive investigation is under way to identify him.
So far, based on the preliminary investigation and the very limited information available because of investigative secrecy, the motives for the murders appear to be weak.
