Shehu spoke to the press yesterday about the American state report on Human Rights in Albania. The PD leader is the latest of the politicians to comment on the report, but without mentioning at all the issues raised by the U.S. Department of State. “Human rights are respected in Albania,” he denied the American report. He then sought comfort in the states of the southeastern Balkan Peninsula: “All the Balkan states, including Greece, were mentioned for violations,” Shehu said. Shehu described as “malicious” those who informed the U.S. Department of State. So far it is not known whether the U.S. department has any other official source of information in Albania besides the embassy. The PD leader seems to be alone in his skeptical opinion of the U.S. report. The leaders of other political parties, from the left to the right, have not questioned the report’s accuracy. page 3
